GOAT FEED

Early in 2006 we obtained a dealership for Nutrition Services Goat Feed. We were dissatisfied with the feeds that we were obtaining from the major feed companies and their lack of desire to help us develop a new goat feed. We have been using, and stocking for resale, three goat feeds, although NS makes several others. The feed that we use for our creep feed and feed for our young weaned billys and nannies is their Boer Goat Developer R-20. Here is the tag information from it:

ACTIVE DRUG INGREDIENT
  Monensin 20 grams
GUARANTEED ANALYSIS
  Protein (min)  17%
  Fat (min)  4.00%
  Fiber (max)  17%
  Calcium (min) .50% (max) 1.30%
  Phosphorous (min) .40%
  Salt (min) .40%  (max) 1.10%
  Potassium (min) 0.70%
  Copper (min) 15 ppm
  Selenium (min) .30 ppm
  Vitamin A (min) 11,000 IU/lb

We feed this feed to the billy and nanny kids till they are sold or until we switch them over to the 24% and whole shelled corn. We also feed this feed to our nannies with kids in the kidding barn mixed with a little shelled corn. We mix it either 3 parts Developer and 1 part whole shelled corn or 2 parts of Developer and 1 part whole shelled corn depending on the weather.  We feed it at the rate of 1# per head per day for each nanny, plus 1# per day for each kid she has. ie: a nanny with 2 kids gets 3 #, etc. we split this into two feedings, feeding half in the morning and half in the evening. I'm sure your nutritionist will tell you this makes your protein too low, but we have seen good results from doing it this way for several years. It helps get more energy into the nannies and helps to "economize" on the feed bill a little.

24% Goat Supplement

ACTIVE DRUG INGREDIENTS:
  Monensin 40 grams
GUARANTEED ANALYSIS
  Protein (min) 24%
(This includes no more than 2.0% equivalent crude protein from non-protein nitrogen)

  Calcium (min) 1.4%
  Calcium (max) 1.7%
  Phosporous .75%

This feed is made to be fed with equal parts of whole shelled corn.  We begin feeding it as the weather cools in the fall and gradually increase the consumption till we are feeding 1# of the supplement and 1# of whole shelled corn per head to each of the billies and nannies through the coldest weather.  We'll tail it off a little as the weather begins to warm in the spring and the nannies get closer to kidding.  They also have a salt block in front of them, NSI Goat Pro Mineral and  get all the fresh water they want and run to a big bale of the best alfalfa hay we can obtain.

1. Contains Albion Chelated Minerals - including organic zinc for hoof health.

2. Contains all essential trace vitamins & minerals including Vitamin E & Selenium for the prevention of white muscle disease.

This mineral is made to be fed free choice. If you have been feeding one of the "major brand" minerals and your goats haven't been eating it real good, you'll think you need to buy your own feed store when you put your goats on this mineral. They will scarf it down like candy for the first couple of weeks but then when their system catches up with what it is lacking, they'll tail off to about 1 to 2 oz per head per day. You'll notice a better hair coat and hooves on your goats after they've been on it for awhile.

Call or e-mail us for prices. Delivery in 2 ton loads is available in some areas.

What Satisfied New Customers Say About
Nutrition Services Feed:

May 23, 2007:
I don't know how the rest of you are feeling about the feed... but here are some things I have noticed.
I have my dairy goats on the Lactating feed for milking goats, WOW! First, it's a pelleted feed which concerned me; in the past my dairy goats have turned their noses up to pelleted feeds. This feed however they consume with eager, robust appetites. AND I'm feeding HALF the amount that I used to feed. AND BETTER YET, getting MORE MILK! Honestly! I am very pleased with the results of this feed and my goats love it.
I have my Boer does with kids on the 24% pelleted feed. My does look great! I've been using this feed for almost 4 months now. My does look better than they ever have. I also feed my bucks this feed and they are sleek and shiny, carrying good weight and looking fantastic. BUT I have noticed the added benefit of this feed. The kids, just looking at the first group that was born and judging from the size, Mark and I were thinking about weaning them this coming weekend. I was checking birth dates, AND guess what!? Those kids are only 2 months old. I won't even consider weaning for another 30 days. They are the size of the weaning age kids (from last year) now! I'm anxious to see weights on these kids in 30 days.
I do put out the developer (creep feed) for the kids. They were slow to start on it, but Mel Uphoff had told me to be patient, that when they decide they are ready for it, they'll eat it. And I have to admit, the older kids have started putting the creep feed away. AND they look fantastic.
We also have the loose mineral supplement available to all the goats. At first they seemed to just stand at the mineral feeders and eat, now of course they are being satisfied, and so they still eat the mineral supplement, but in passing.
Am I excited about this feed? YES! YES! YES! But the proof is standing in my pastures. I have goats that are doing great and raising nice BIG kids.
I hope you are all seeing positive results.

Nutrition Services Feed

We began using Nutrition Services 24% supplement mixed half/half with corn approximately 8 weeks ago. While we didn't think we saw any big changes immediately... we both observed a change in the herd within a couple of weeks. Nothing physical... which I am confident we will see very soon, as the kids have begun to hit the ground. But what we did notice was a change in attitude within the herd. They are calmer and more content.

By this I mean... when we do evening chores, due to the coyote population in our area... our does are in off the pasture (pasture/hay access all day) in the evening and locked into corrals for the night (where our LGD's) can
patrol all the way around these corrals all night long. When we bring the goats in for the night we put out the grain/NS 24% to encourage everyone to come quietly to the corrals. Well in the past we we are putting the corn out it was a knock down - drag out battle with all the does scrambling and knocking each other around.

Now, I'm not saying they don't still shove each other around... goats are not polite eaters. BUT since beginning the use of NS 24% supplement in the corn... they are more calm, they still push their way around, but no-one is being knocked down, and stepped on. AND when they are finished eating they settle right down have a big drink and find a place to lie down.

They are more content then they have been.

Kids are hitting the ground, so we begin feeding the developer soon... we'll keep you posted!
